Blog Entry # 1: Advertising

I was flipping through a Marie Claire magazine the other day because I wanted to read the cover article on Jennfier Garner. Before I even got the table of conents, I realized that the magazine is emedded with various advertisements. I had never before realized the number of pages dedicated to advertising. I used to read a magazine with a mission and my goal was never to read into the advertisements. Today, I analyzed the meaning of the different advertisments. The advertisements are not a true depiction of reality. The advertisments are appealing and artistic. Advertisement is a new art medium. The advertisers are good at what they do—they are masters at selling their product but they are also masters of decpetion. They are not showing us the world as it is, but the world as how we want it to be. We all want to be glamorous, beautiful, skinny, and elegant but on any given day, no one person is all those things stimatenously. We all have flaws and one of the difficulties of life is accepting those flaws—the only person you have to live with forever is yourself, so embrace you for you. The advertisers are not showing normal, every day. you next door neighbor, kind of girl. They are showing the girl we all want to be (and we all could probably be that girl after we went through hair, make-up, touch-up, etc…). These advertisers may obtain more of a base if they depicted the girl we all are.
