Blog Entry # 3: Times Square

I went into New York City on Sunday to see Rent on Broadway. We had some free time to frolic around the city and while I was walking in Times Square, I realized that this is an advertising mecca. I had visited Times Square before, but only when I was younger, so I had never looked at it from a media perspective. When I visited I saw scrolls, billboards, windows, and more that were advertisements for ABC, MTV, Target, m&m, Disney, GMC, Verizon, Chevrolet, Budweiser, FOX, and many more. Not only were the streets rolling in advertisements but a lot of the advertisements were stimulating. In this era of technology, it is no longer enough to have just a picture and some words to advertise your product. It is more effective to utilize videos, slide-shows, music, scrolls, and other new technological inventions. I saw a lot of this in Times Square. Stations like ABC, MTV, and FOX would have big screens projecting episodes of upcoming shows, clips from news hours, and even when they were just advertising their name it was flashy and tonic. Using current technology is important in the world of advertising as it attracts a larger crowd. When directing advertisements, at a younger crowd it is especially vital to include a variety of forms of transmission. Technology has become a crucial part of advertising and Times Square is the perfect display of this.
