Blog Entry # 5: The “Negative” News

My mom was never fond of me watching the news and I always knew why but I didn’t understand. She always said that there was so much violence and negativity in the news that she did not want me to be exposed to. As the oldest child, her goal was to keep me as innocent as possible. These days, I watch the news daily and often read it online as well and now more than ever I can understand why she did not want me tuning in. The news is very negative and shows a lot of destruction and violence. I have recently begun to realize the positive aspect of the news and how it affects my life. There has been a lot of news coverage concerning the school shooting at Northern Illinois University and the tornado that struck the Southern American states. It is with both of these that I realized why I check the news daily. It keeps me connected and it keeps me up to date. Within minutes, I can know what has just happened half way across the country or even the world. I value being a well-informed and well educated citizen—especially about current events—and the news helps me do this. Although, most of what I view is negative, violent, and destructive, that is only a reflection of what is going on. When the United States recognized Kosovo’s independence, that was broadcast and it was positive. I do believe news stations should pay more attention to focusing on the positive, I also comprehend that a lot of negative is circulating in our world and it captures the attention of the average citizen. We can’t not be aware of our surroundings because it is negative. We have to stick by our country and our world, in good and bad—its our obligation.
